Among all the technical concepts in commercial print artwork preparation, overprint, knockout and trapping are the least understood by non-specialist buyers — and the most likely to produce dramatic and unexpected results when they are incorrectly specified or left as default without consideration.

A design that looks perfectly correct on screen — clean colour transitions, crisp text on coloured backgrounds, precisely aligned multi-colour elements — can arrive from the press with missing colour areas, with text that has disappeared into a background colour, with white hairline gaps between adjacent colour elements, or with unexpected third colours appearing where two intended colours overlap. None of these problems were visible during design. All of them originated in how the artwork handled the relationship between overlapping colour areas.

This is the domain of overprint, knockout and trapping — three related concepts that together define how adjacent and overlapping colour elements in a print design behave in production. They are not aesthetic concepts. They are mechanical specifications about what happens at the boundaries between colour areas when physical ink is applied to physical paper or substrate.

The Three Concepts: Definitions

Knockout:

Knockout is the default behaviour of colour in commercial print: when a coloured design element (a logo, a text block, a graphic shape) is positioned on top of a background colour, the background colour is removed — “knocked out” — in the area occupied by the foreground element. The foreground element prints in its own ink; the background ink is not printed in the area beneath it.

The result is that the foreground element sits on the white paper surface within its own ink, surrounded by the background colour. There is no overlap between the two inks; they share a boundary.

Knockout is correct for almost all design situations. A corporate navy wordmark on a gold background should be knocked out — the navy ink prints in the wordmark area, the gold ink does not print there. If both navy and gold were printed on top of each other, the mixed colour would not be either navy or gold.

Overprint:

Overprint is the alternative behaviour: when a design element is set to overprint, its ink is applied on top of any ink already printed in the same area — the inks physically overlap and mix. The foreground element does not remove the background ink; both inks are deposited, and the overlapping area shows the mixed colour result.

Overprint is used deliberately in specific situations — typically for black ink on coloured backgrounds, for certain creative colour mixing effects, and for trapping (as explained below). It is also one of the most frequent causes of unintended colour changes when a file has been set to overprint accidentally or by default.

The most common unintended overprint problem: a solid black text block set to overprint on a coloured background. This is correct — solid black text should always overprint on coloured backgrounds to prevent registration-related knockout gaps (see Section 5). But if the design also contains non-black elements that have been accidentally set to overprint — a white logo element, for example — those elements will disappear when printed. White ink overprinting on any background “mixes” with the background colour — but since white ink in CMYK printing is simply the absence of ink (the paper white), overprinting white on a coloured background means the white area has no white ink applied and the background colour shows through. The white element effectively becomes invisible.

Trapping:

Trapping is a planned, intentional slight overlap between adjacent colour areas — a micro-overlap of 0.2–0.5mm applied at the boundary between two colours. Trapping is not something visible in the final printed piece under normal viewing conditions. It is a production specification that compensates for the mechanical tolerance in multi-colour printing registration.

In multi-colour printing — whether offset, screen printing, or pad printing — each colour is applied in a separate pass or through a separate screen. The registration of each colour relative to all others has a mechanical tolerance: in offset printing, ±0.2–0.5mm; in screen printing, ±0.5–1.5mm. This means that the edge of one colour area may be up to 0.5mm (offset) or 1.5mm (screen printing) displaced from its intended position relative to adjacent colours.

Without trapping, when two adjacent knocked-out colours are slightly misregistered, a white gap appears at the boundary — a hairline strip of unprinted paper visible between the two colour areas. This is the white hairline gap problem. Trapping prevents it by creating a planned overlap at the boundary: one colour slightly extends into the other’s territory, so that any misregistration within the tolerance range is covered by the extending colour rather than exposing the paper beneath.

How These Concepts Manifest in Production

Understanding how overprint, knockout, and trapping actually manifest in specific design scenarios clarifies when each is relevant and what can go wrong.

Scenario 1 — Coloured text on a coloured background:

A corporate newsletter has a corporate navy background panel with a white headline text block. The white text should be knocked out — the white letterforms should be transparent windows in the navy background through which the paper white shows. If the white text is accidentally set to overprint, the white ink is applied on top of the navy background — but in CMYK printing, white is produced by the absence of ink (the paper white), not by a white ink layer. The “white ink” deposited on top of navy is nothing — the navy shows through, and the white headline text disappears.

This is one of the most visually catastrophic overprint errors in commercial print — an entire headline or large text block simply vanishes from the printed piece. And it is invisible on screen in normal design view, because screen display does not preview overprint behaviour in standard view mode.

Scenario 2 — Multi-colour logo on a light background:

A corporate logo has a navy wordmark and a gold symbol on a white background. The navy and gold elements are adjacent — the symbol sits immediately next to the wordmark with a very fine gap between them. In offset printing with a ±0.5mm registration tolerance, the gap between the navy and gold may occasionally close (the gold shifts toward the navy) or reveal a white hairline gap (the gold shifts away from the navy). Trapping the boundary — expanding the gold symbol very slightly into the space between the two elements by 0.3mm — ensures that any gold-toward-navy shift creates a slight gold-over-navy overlap rather than a gap, and any gold-away-from-navy shift is covered by the 0.3mm expansion.

Scenario 3 — Black text on a coloured background:

A premium business card has a midnight navy background with black text for the address details. Black text on a coloured background is the classic overprint scenario — black should always overprint on coloured backgrounds in offset and digital printing. If the black text is set to knockout, the registration tolerance creates a risk of a white gap between the black text and the navy background wherever the knockout boundary is slightly misregistered. Since black is a dark colour and the background is also dark, overprinting the black on top of the navy produces visually imperceptible colour mixing (black on navy prints as black) while eliminating the knockout registration gap risk.

Scenario 4 — Deliberate overprint for colour mixing:

A design uses only two Pantone spot colour inks — Pantone 021 C (orange) and Pantone Reflex Blue C. An element in the design is intended to appear dark brown — achievable without a third ink by overprinting the orange on the blue in that area. The overprinted orange-on-blue produces a dark brown mixed colour from two spot colour inks. This deliberate overprint specification is a creative cost-saving technique — achieving three apparent colours from two inks — that requires explicit overprint setting in the artwork file.

Materials and Applications: Where These Issues Are Most Relevant

Offset lithographic printing:

Offset printing has a registration tolerance of ±0.2–0.5mm on modern well-calibrated equipment and ±0.5–1.0mm on older or less precisely calibrated equipment. This tolerance makes trapping relevant for any design with adjacent Pantone spot colours or adjacent CMYK colour areas with distinct, visible boundaries. Screen printing on fabric:

Screen printing has a registration tolerance of ±0.5–1.5mm — significantly larger than offset printing, making the trapping requirement more critical. For screen-printed garment designs with adjacent colour areas (a navy wordmark with a white detail element, a coloured design with defined colour boundaries), the larger registration tolerance of screen printing means that without trapping, white hairline gaps between colour areas are more common and more visible than in offset print. Pad printing:

Pad printing has a registration tolerance of ±0.3–1.0mm depending on the substrate curvature and equipment. For multi-colour pad printing on curved surfaces (pen barrels, keyrings, rounded product faces), the registration tolerance is at the wider end due to the mechanical challenge of maintaining precise registration across curved surfaces. Trapping is important for any pad printing job with adjacent colour areas that must align precisely.

Digital printing:

Digital printing (inkjet or laser) applies all CMYK channels simultaneously from a single print head array — there are no separate passes for different colours, and there is no registration tolerance between colour channels. This means that trapping is technically unnecessary for digital printing — the registration between colour channels is essentially perfect. However, for CMYK artwork files that may also be used for offset printing (where trapping is necessary), applying trapping for both processes is common practice.

UV printing on hard goods:

UV printing applies CMYK inks simultaneously from multiple heads with very tight registration control. For standard single-pass UV printing, trapping is not required for the same reasons as digital printing. For multi-pass UV printing (where the print head passes multiple times for special effects or white ink underbase), slight registration tolerance may exist — confirm trapping requirements with the specific UV printing supplier.

The Rules: When to Use Overprint, Knockout, and Trapping

Overprint rules:

Always overprint: 100% Black (100K) text and elements on coloured backgrounds. Black overprinting on colour is the industry standard default for very good reason: black ink is dark enough that the colour mixing effect of overprinting it on another dark or medium colour is visually imperceptible (black on navy prints as black; black on teal prints as black). But the benefit of overprinting — eliminating the knockout registration gap risk — is significant. Always set 100K black text to overprint on any coloured background.

Always overprint: Thin black rules and outlines on coloured areas. Same principle as black text — thin black rules (hairlines, borders) on coloured backgrounds are at high risk of showing white registration gaps if knocked out. Set them to overprint.

Never overprint: White elements on coloured backgrounds. White in CMYK is the paper surface — there is no white ink in standard CMYK printing. Overprinting white on a coloured background makes the white area invisible (the coloured background shows through the “white” which is simply an absence of ink). White elements must always knock out.

Never overprint: Light colours on dark backgrounds unless deliberately creating a mixed colour. Overprinting yellow on navy produces a greenish result. Overprinting light colours on dark backgrounds produces unexpected mixed colours unless the mixing is the deliberate design intent. Unless a specific colour mixing result is intended, all coloured elements on darker backgrounds should be knockout.

Overprint selectively for deliberate colour mixing effects. In spot colour printing with a limited ink count, deliberate overprint can create additional apparent colours from a reduced ink set. This requires precise design planning and explicit discussion with the printer to confirm that the overprint will produce the intended mixed colour result.

Knockout rules:

Default for all coloured elements on different coloured backgrounds. Knockout is the default — it is what Illustrator applies by default to all coloured shapes unless overprint is explicitly enabled. Most design elements should be knockout.

Knockout: All white elements on any background. White elements must always knockout — never overprint.

Knockout: All photographic and complex CMYK imagery. Photographs and complex CMYK illustrations should always knockout — the colour information in each channel is the result of the complete image rendering, and overprinting channels would produce unexpected colour shifts.

Trapping rules:

Apply trapping to all adjacent spot colour boundaries in offset and screen printing. At any boundary between two adjacent spot colours — where one colour ends and another begins — apply a trap of 0.2–0.5mm (offset) or 0.5–1.0mm (screen printing). The lighter colour should spread into the darker colour — this is because the lighter colour expanding slightly into the darker colour creates a less visible overlap than the darker colour expanding into the lighter.

Apply trapping to Pantone black overprinting on spot colours. When 100K black overprints on a Pantone spot colour background, the boundary between the black and the background is effectively self-trapping (the black overprint covers any gap), so no additional trapping is needed at this boundary.

Do not trap: Adjacent areas of the same colour. Trapping only applies at boundaries between different colours. Shapes of the same colour that abut each other do not need trapping.

Do not trap: Digital printing CMYK designs. As noted above, digital printing’s simultaneous colour deposition eliminates the need for trapping between CMYK channels.

Advantages of Correct Overprint and Trapping Specification

Elimination of white hairline gaps: The most visible consequence of correctly applied trapping is the absence of white hairline gaps at colour boundaries. In a correctly trapped design, the registered and printed result shows clean, crisp colour boundaries under close inspection — without the thin white hairlines that characterise an untrapped design printed at the edge of registration tolerance.

Elimination of unintended colour disappearance: Correctly specified overprint for black elements and correctly specified knockout for white and light elements prevents the unintended colour disappearance that results from incorrect overprint settings. A prepress check that verifies overprint settings — using Illustrator’s Overprint Preview or InDesign’s Overprint Preview mode — catches unintended overprint before production.

More reliable multi-colour registration across production runs: For ongoing corporate programmes where the same design is produced multiple times across different production runs and potentially different facilities, correct trapping specification ensures consistent colour boundary quality regardless of the slight registration variations between runs. The trapping specification absorbs these variations without visible consequence.

Reduced prepress correction work: Artwork submitted with correctly specified overprint and trapping settings requires less prepress intervention. Many UAE print facilities apply trapping automatically in prepress as a standard step — but automatic trapping applied to incorrectly specified overprint settings can compound rather than correct the problem. Correctly specified artwork that the prepress team can pass through without modification moves to production faster.

Setting Overprint in Adobe Illustrator

How to check and set overprint in Illustrator:

Select any object in Illustrator. Open the Attributes panel (Window → Attributes). The Attributes panel shows two checkboxes: “Overprint Fill” and “Overprint Stroke.” These checkboxes control whether the selected object’s fill and stroke overprint or knockout.

Default state: Both checkboxes unchecked = knockout (the standard default for all new objects).

To set overprint: Check “Overprint Fill” for fill overprint, “Overprint Stroke” for stroke overprint.

Checking overprint visually:

The standard Illustrator design view does not show overprint behaviour — it displays all elements as if they are knockout, regardless of their overprint setting. To preview overprint behaviour accurately, enable Overprint Preview: View → Overprint Preview (keyboard shortcut: Option + Shift + Command + Y on Mac / Alt + Shift + Ctrl + Y on Windows)

In Overprint Preview mode, elements set to overprint show their actual printed appearance — overprinting black on a coloured background appears as standard black; overprinting white on a coloured background reveals the white element disappearing into the background colour. Always check Overprint Preview when any overprint settings have been applied to the design.

Standard overprint settings for UAE corporate print:

For a typical UAE corporate print job (business card, brochure, letterhead) with a coloured background and black text:

  1. Select all black text elements → Window → Attributes → Check “Overprint Fill”
  2. Select all black rule elements and borders → Window → Attributes → Check “Overprint Stroke”
  3. Select all white elements → Window → Attributes → Confirm BOTH “Overprint Fill” and “Overprint Stroke” are UNCHECKED
  4. Select all non-black coloured elements on coloured backgrounds → Window → Attributes → Confirm BOTH checkboxes are UNCHECKED (knockout)
  5. Enable Overprint Preview and visually verify that all elements appear as intended

Setting Trapping in Adobe Illustrator

Trapping in Illustrator can be applied in several ways, each with specific use cases:

Method 1 — Stroke-based manual trapping:

The simplest manual trapping method for spot colour designs: add a thin stroke to the lighter-coloured element at the boundary with the darker colour. The stroke is set to the lighter colour (matching the fill), at a width equal to twice the intended trap amount (since the stroke straddles the path boundary — half inside, half outside). The stroke is set to overprint.

For a 0.4mm trap: Add a 0.8mm stroke in the lighter colour, set to overprint.

This method is manually applied per object and is practical for simple designs with a limited number of colour boundaries.

Method 2 — Pathfinder expand-based trapping:

For designs with complex colour boundaries, the Pathfinder expand method produces cleaner trapping: use Object → Expand to generate outlines of the lighter-colour element, then use the Offset Path function to expand the outline by the trap amount. Apply the expanded path as a new shape in the lighter colour, set to overprint.

This method requires more steps but produces very clean trap geometry for complex shapes.

Method 3 — InDesign automated trapping:

For multi-page documents produced in InDesign, the built-in trap presets (Edit → Transparency Flattener Presets, or through the Print/Export trap settings) apply trapping automatically during PDF export. InDesign’s default trap settings typically apply a 0.25pt trap — appropriate for high-quality offset printing on premium paper.

For screen printing artwork produced in Illustrator, manual trapping is typically required — always discuss the appropriate trap amount with the screen printing facility, as the correct trap width depends on their specific registration tolerance.

Method 4 — Prepress automatic trapping:

Many UAE commercial print facilities apply trapping automatically in their prepress workflow using dedicated trapping software (Esko PowerTrapper, Pitstop trapping modules). For offset print jobs, the facility’s prepress team may apply trapping as a standard service — eliminating the client-side trapping requirement for standard print jobs.

For screen printing and pad printing, prepress automatic trapping is less universally available — trapping in the client artwork is more commonly required.

When in doubt: discuss trapping with the specific supplier at the briefing stage. Ask whether they apply automatic trapping in prepress (and at what trap width), or whether client-side trapping is required.

Production Considerations

Overprint verification before submission:

Before submitting any multi-colour print artwork, verify overprint settings by enabling Overprint Preview in Illustrator or InDesign. Specifically check:

  1. All 100K black text and elements are set to overprint — they should appear as clean black on any background colour in Overprint Preview
  2. All white elements are set to knockout — they should remain visible as white (or paper colour) areas in Overprint Preview
  3. No unintended overprint on coloured elements — select all and check Attributes panel for any unexpected overprint checkboxes on non-black elements

The PDF/X export and overprint:

PDF/X format preserves overprint settings as defined in the artwork file. When the artwork file has correct overprint settings, the exported PDF will also have correct settings. The prepress preflight at the production facility will verify overprint settings as part of its standard check.

A common point of confusion: Acrobat Reader’s default PDF display mode does not always show overprint behaviour correctly. To verify overprint in Acrobat: Preferences → Page Display → show artwork with overprint preview enabled (in Acrobat Pro: View → Preview → Overprint Preview). This is the same principle as Illustrator’s Overprint Preview — the normal viewing mode does not preview overprint.

Trapping for bilingual Arabic-English designs:

Arabic script’s curved letterforms and fine connecting strokes create complex colour boundaries when Arabic text is set in a coloured typeface on a different coloured background. Trapping specifications for Arabic text boundaries require the same principles as Latin text — but the curved and flowing Arabic path geometry means that stroke-based trapping (Method 1 above) may need more careful handling at the junction points of Arabic letterforms to avoid trapping artefacts at the fine connecting strokes.

For bilingual Arabic-English designs requiring trapping, confirm the trap specification with the prepress team before finalising — the specific character geometry of Arabic scripts requires the prepress professional’s assessment of appropriate trap strategy.

Overprint and rich black:

Rich black (60C 40M 40Y 100K) used for large solid black areas should be set to knockout — not overprint — when it is used as a background that other elements print on top of. If rich black overprints on a coloured background, the CMYK channels of the rich black mix with the background colour, potentially producing unexpected colour results. Reserve overprint settings for 100K single-channel black text and rule elements on coloured backgrounds; set rich black areas to knockout.

Checking third-party supplied artwork:

When artwork is supplied by external agencies, marketing teams, or design partners from outside the UAE, the overprint settings in the supplied file should be explicitly verified — do not assume they are correct. International designers producing for UAE print may not be familiar with the specific overprint conventions used by UAE commercial print facilities. Overprint Preview in Illustrator is the fastest verification tool — open the supplied file, enable Overprint Preview, and confirm that all elements appear as intended.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

White text set to overprint: The most dramatic and most common overprint mistake. White text or white elements on a coloured background set to overprint become invisible in the printed piece — the coloured background shows through where the white should be. This is invisible in standard screen view but immediately apparent in Overprint Preview. Always verify that all white elements in a design are set to knockout (overprint unchecked) before submission.

Not applying trapping to screen printing artwork: Screen printing’s larger registration tolerance (±0.5–1.5mm) makes trapping more critical than for offset printing — yet many screen printing artwork briefs are submitted without trapping, because the buyers and designers involved are not aware of the requirement. For any screen printing design with adjacent colour areas, trapping at 0.5–1.0mm is the production quality standard. Missing trapping in screen printing artwork produces visible white gaps between colour areas in the finished print, particularly at colours that abut each other across the full design width.

Applying overprint to coloured elements accidentally: A coloured element — a corporate gold shape on a white background — accidentally set to overprint will produce a different result than intended: the gold ink deposited on the white paper background is acceptable (gold on white is gold), but if the same shape is repositioned onto a coloured area elsewhere in the design, the gold overprinting on the background colour produces a mixed colour rather than clean gold. Always confirm that coloured elements are set to knockout unless overprint is the deliberate design intent.

Assuming the production facility will handle trapping automatically: While many UAE offset print facilities apply automatic trapping in prepress as a standard service, not all do — and screen printing, pad printing, and specialty print facilities frequently require client-supplied trapping. Never assume automatic trapping will be applied without confirming with the specific supplier. If the supplier does not apply automatic trapping, the artwork must include client-side trapping before submission.

Not checking Overprint Preview before submitting: Submitting artwork without verifying overprint settings in Overprint Preview mode is submitting without checking one of the most critical production parameters. The standard design view in Illustrator and InDesign does not show overprint behaviour — only Overprint Preview reveals it. Make Overprint Preview verification a standard checklist item for every multi-colour print artwork submission.

Trapping toward the darker colour instead of the lighter: Trapping convention is to spread the lighter colour into the darker colour — the lighter element expands slightly into the darker element’s territory. If trapping is applied in the wrong direction (darker into lighter), the overlap shows the darker colour as a visible border around the lighter element, which may be noticeable under close inspection. Always apply trap expansion from the lighter colour into the darker.

Africa: In South Africa’s commercial print market, overprint and trapping are managed according to international professional standards — UAE levels of oversight are appropriate. Case Study: The Disappearing White Logo — UAE Bank Annual Report

Organisation: The group corporate communications team of a major UAE-listed bank 

Brief: 3,000 copies of the bank’s annual report — a 104-page A4 perfect-bound document, full-colour offset printing on 130 GSM silk art paper, with a black-and-gold 4mm board hardcover 

Overprint failure:

The hardcover design featured a large black panel covering the full front cover, with the bank’s logo reversed — appearing as white — in the centre of the black panel, flanked by two gold decorative elements.

The annual report layout was produced by an international design agency. The white reversed logo on the front cover was produced by placing the logo artwork file in InDesign and changing its colour to white. The logo artwork file — originally produced in Illustrator in the bank’s corporate navy — had been prepared with all elements set to overprint as part of a previous spot colour printing project where overprint was required for a different application.

When the logo was recoloured to white in InDesign and placed on the black cover background, the overprint setting from the original Illustrator file was preserved.
