When a marketing coordinator submits a photograph for a corporate brochure and the image is at 300 DPI, nobody comments on the resolution. The photograph prints sharply, the brochure looks professional, and the resolution does its job quietly and without recognition.
When the same coordinator submits a photograph at 72 DPI — extracted from the company website for use in the same brochure — the failure is immediate and unmistakable. The photograph prints blurry. The edges of faces and objects are soft. In extreme cases, the individual pixels are visible as a grid of coloured squares. The brochure looks unprofessional. Resolution is not a technical nicety — it is a fundamental specification that determines whether a raster image contains enough pixel information to produce a sharp printed result at the intended print size. Too little resolution, and the printing process faithfully reproduces whatever softness, blurring, or pixelation the inadequate image contains. The printing machine does not correct resolution problems — it amplifies them.

DPI — Dots Per Inch: DPI stands for Dots Per Inch — strictly, a measure of the output density of a printing device. A commercial inkjet or laser printer deposits ink dots at a specific density — a 1200 DPI printer can place 1,200 ink dots in each linear inch of the printed output. At this density, individual dots are invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance, and the printed output appears as a continuous-tone image.
In common usage within the graphic design and print industry, DPI is used interchangeably with PPI to describe the resolution of image files — even though technically, image files contain pixels (PPI) while print devices output dots (DPI). For practical purposes in artwork preparation, the terms are synonymous: when a print supplier asks for artwork at “300 DPI,” they mean artwork where every inch of the image at the intended print size contains 300 pixels of information.

How Resolution Works in Print Production
Understanding what happens to a raster image during the printing process explains why resolution matters and why the 300 DPI standard exists as a commercial print minimum.
The printing process: Commercial printing devices — offset presses, digital inkjet presses, UV flatbed printers, DTF printers — render raster images by translating pixel data into a pattern of printed dots on the output surface. Each pixel in the image file is mapped to a specific area of the print output, and the printing device deposits ink in that area to reproduce the pixel’s colour value.
When the image has adequate resolution (300 DPI or above at print size), each pixel maps to a very small print area — smaller than the human eye can resolve at normal viewing distance. The result appears as a continuous, smooth image with no visible pixel structure.
When the image has inadequate resolution, each pixel maps to a larger print area. As resolution decreases, the pixel structure becomes progressively more visible — first as a slight softness or lack of crispness, then as visible pixelation where individual coloured squares can be seen. Below approximately 150 DPI, the pixel structure is clearly visible to most observers at normal viewing distance, producing an unmistakably unprofessional printed result.
Why 300 DPI is the commercial print standard: The 300 DPI standard is empirically derived — it represents the resolution at which the pixel structure of a typical photographic image becomes invisible to the human eye at normal reading distance (approximately 30–40 centimetres for a book or brochure, 50–70 centimetres for a poster). Below 300 DPI, slight softness may be perceptible to trained observers. An image interpolated from 72 DPI to 300 DPI is not a 300 DPI image. Embroidery: Embroidery is not a resolution-dependent process in the same way — it is a stitch-based physical process, not a pixel-based digital reproduction. However, the artwork used for digitising (converting to an embroidery stitch file) should be provided as vector artwork for maximum accuracy. If raster artwork must be used as the digitising reference, provide it at the highest available resolution — typically 300 DPI or above at the intended embroidery size — to give the digitiser the clearest possible reference for the stitch path.
Laser engraving: Laser engraving in vector mode (where the laser follows vector paths) is not resolution-dependent — it operates at the precision of the vector data, which is scale-independent. Laser engraving in raster mode (where the laser scans the image line by line, like a printer) requires raster artwork at 600 DPI or above at the final engraving size for fine detail reproduction. How to Check and Verify Resolution
In Adobe Photoshop: Open the image. Navigate to Image → Image Size. The Image Size dialog shows:
- Width and Height in pixels (the total pixel count)
- Width and Height in the specified document units (inches, centimetres, millimetres)
- Resolution in PPI (pixels per inch at the specified document dimensions)
Ensure the “Resample” checkbox is unchecked when checking resolution — this shows the true relationship between pixel count, document size, and resolution without any resampling calculation. Change the Width value to the intended print size and observe the Resolution value — if it falls below 300 PPI for standard print applications, the image does not contain sufficient resolution for that print size.

For a photograph to print at 200mm x 150mm (approximately 8 inches x 6 inches) at 300 DPI:
- Required width in pixels: 8 × 300 = 2,400 pixels
- Required height in pixels: 6 × 300 = 1,800 pixels
- Minimum required total pixels: 2,400 x 1,800 = 4.32 megapixels
If the photograph file is 2 megapixels (as is common for many web-optimised photographs), it does not contain sufficient resolution for this print application at 300 DPI. At the megapixel count of 2 megapixels, the maximum print size at 300 DPI would be approximately 50mm x 40mm (approximately 2 inches x 1.5 inches).

When a production system asks for artwork at “300 DPI,” they are referring to raster image content — vector content in the same file is unaffected by the DPI specification.
This is why vector format is so strongly preferred for logos and line artwork: the resolution question simply does not apply.
Raster files embedded in vector documents: A common source of resolution problems in print production is raster images embedded within vector documents — photographs placed in an Illustrator or InDesign layout, for example. The vector elements of the document are resolution-independent, but the embedded raster images are not. The effective resolution of an embedded raster image changes when the layout is scaled — if a 300 DPI photograph is placed in an Illustrator document and the document is scaled to 150% of its original size, the effective resolution of the photograph drops to 200 DPI. Always verify the effective resolution of embedded raster images after any document scaling.
Screen-captured images: Screenshots and screen captures have resolution matching the screen display — typically 72–96 DPI for standard displays, or 144–220 DPI for high-resolution (Retina) displays. At these resolutions, screen captures are never adequate for commercial print — even a Retina display screenshot at 220 PPI is below the 300 DPI minimum for close-view print applications. Smartphone photography: Modern smartphone cameras capture images at very high total pixel counts — a 48-megapixel smartphone camera captures images approximately 8,000 x 6,000 pixels. Resolution and file size management: High-resolution images produce large file sizes. Resolution for Arabic text and calligraphy in raster format: If Arabic calligraphy is provided as a raster image (rather than as vector paths), it must meet the standard 300 DPI minimum at the intended print size.
