The embroidery facility comes back: “We need the vector file.” The coordinator replies: “I sent you the logo — it is the PNG from our website.” The embroidery team explains that a PNG is not a vector file. The coordinator does not know what a vector file is or where to find one. The programme is delayed while the design agency is contacted, the original source file is located, and the correct format is exported.

This scenario — or a version of it — happens across the UAE corporate print and promotional products market hundreds of times every week. It costs time, creates friction, and delays programmes that were planned and budgeted on the assumption that production would begin immediately upon artwork submission.

The root cause of this recurring problem is a gap in knowledge: the difference between vector and raster graphics, why it matters for print, and which format is required for which application. This is not specialist design knowledge — it is practical procurement knowledge that every marketing coordinator, brand manager, and procurement professional who works with print and branding suppliers should have.

What Is the Difference Between Vector and Raster?

The fundamental difference between vector and raster graphics is not about quality, software, or file size — it is about the mathematical model used to describe the image.

Raster graphics are pixel-based.

A raster image is a grid of individual coloured squares — pixels — arranged in rows and columns. The image information is stored as the colour value of each pixel at a specific position in the grid. A photograph is a raster image. A screenshot is a raster image. A PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or PSD file is a raster file.

The defining characteristic of raster images — and the source of every problem that arises from submitting them for print applications where they are not appropriate — is that the quality of the image is fixed at the resolution at which it was created or captured. A raster image contains a specific number of pixels. When you display it at a size where each pixel corresponds to one screen pixel, it looks perfect. When you display it at a size larger than its pixel count supports, the pixels become visible — the image appears soft, blurry, or, at extreme magnification, composed of visible coloured squares (pixelation).

This is why a logo JPEG downloaded from a website looks crisp on screen but blurry when printed. The website JPEG typically contains enough pixels to display correctly at the small size of a webpage logo — perhaps 200 pixels wide at 72 DPI. To print that logo at 80mm wide at 300 DPI print resolution, approximately 945 pixels of width are required. The 200-pixel website JPEG does not contain enough pixels to fill this requirement without visible degradation.

Vector graphics are mathematics-based.

A vector image is a collection of geometric objects — points, lines, curves, and shapes — defined by mathematical equations. Instead of describing an image as a grid of pixels, a vector file says: “Draw a circle with its centre at coordinates (100, 50), with a radius of 30 units, filled with Pantone 286 C, with a 2-point black stroke.” This mathematical description can be rendered at any size — from a 5mm business card stamp to a 50-metre building banner — with identical precision and sharpness, because the mathematical description is scale-independent. No matter how large the output, the software recalculates the rendering from the equation, always producing perfectly sharp edges.

This scale independence is the critical advantage of vector graphics for print and branding applications. A vector logo file can produce a perfectly sharp impression at any size, on any medium, for any production process that accepts vector input. The same file serves the business card, the exhibition banner, the embroidery digitising, the screen printing film, and the laser engraving machine — all from a single source.

How Each Format Works in Print Production

Understanding how vector and raster files are actually used in the production workflow helps clarify why the format requirement exists and what happens when the wrong format is supplied.

Vector files in production:

When a screen printing facility receives a vector EPS or AI file for a logo to be printed on a promotional t-shirt, the artwork department opens the file in a vector application and examines the colour separations. Each colour in the vector file is a separate layer — the corporate navy blue is one layer, the white wordmark is another. The artwork team outputs each layer as a film positive — a black-and-white representation of where that specific colour will be printed — which is then used to expose the printing screen.

Because the artwork is vector, the film positive output can be produced at exactly the correct scale for the print job — the vector mathematics are recalculated at the output resolution, producing perfectly sharp film edges regardless of how large or small the output is. The screen printing press then reproduces the design from these sharp film positives, producing clean, precise colour edges on the garment.

If, instead, a low-resolution JPEG had been submitted, the artwork team would face a different situation. The JPEG is a fixed pixel grid. To produce a film positive from it at print resolution, the pixels must be interpolated — the software must guess the colour values of the additional pixels required to fill the print resolution grid. This interpolation produces soft, slightly blurry edges — and these soft edges are reproduced on the printed garment as slightly fuzzy, indistinct colour transitions rather than the clean, crisp edges that the vector version would produce.

Raster files in production:

When a UV printing facility receives a TIFF file of a campaign design — a complex illustrated image with photographic elements, gradients, and textured backgrounds — the artwork is opened in the facility’s RIP (Raster Image Processor) software, which interprets the pixel data and generates the CMYK output channels for the print heads. The RIP processes the image at the resolution provided — 300 DPI at the print size — and reproduces it with the colour accuracy and detail that the raster image contains.

In this application, raster is the correct format. A UV printing campaign illustration with photographic content, subtle gradients, and complex texture cannot be expressed as a collection of vector geometric objects — it is inherently a continuous-tone image that requires pixel-based storage and rendering. The appropriate format is a high-resolution TIFF or PSD, not a vector file.

Materials and Applications: When to Use Each Format

The choice between vector and raster is not always obvious from the application alone — it depends on the content of the design. The following guidelines resolve the most common decisions encountered in UAE corporate print and branding production.

Always vector:

Corporate logos and wordmarks: Any design composed of defined shapes, geometric forms, and type — regardless of complexity or colour count — should be stored and submitted in vector format. The logo is used across an enormous range of sizes and applications throughout its commercial life. Vector format serves every application from the smallest business card stamp to the largest exhibition banner from a single source file.

Line art and technical diagrams: Circuit diagrams, architectural illustrations, product schematics, maps, and any other design composed primarily of lines, curves, and defined shapes should be produced in vector format.

Typography and text-based designs: Designs where text is a primary element — letterheads, business cards, stationery, signage — should be vector format to maintain maximum type sharpness at any output size.

Screen printing colour separations: Each colour layer in a screen printing artwork must be a clean vector shape that can be output as a film positive without pixel softening at the edges. Raster colour separations produce inferior film positives and therefore inferior printed results.

Embroidery digitising input: The digitising software that converts a logo design into an embroidery stitch file requires clean vector outlines to trace accurately. Raster artwork can be used as a reference but produces less accurate digitising results than vector input.

Laser engraving artwork: The laser engraving machine follows vector paths for maximum precision. Raster input can be used for certain laser engraving modes (raster scanning mode) but vector input produces cleaner, more precise engraved marks.

Foil stamping and debossing die production: Die production for foil stamping and embossing/debossing is done from vector artwork exclusively — the die manufacturer machines the die from the vector paths.

Always raster:

Photography: Photographs are continuous-tone images captured by a camera sensor as a pixel grid. They cannot be meaningfully represented in vector format — a vector conversion of a photograph (auto-tracing) produces a stylised, posterised interpretation, not the original photographic image. Photography must be submitted as a high-resolution raster file — TIFF preferred, JPEG acceptable at high quality settings, minimum 300 DPI at the intended print size.

Complex illustrated artwork with texture, shading, or photographic elements: Campaign illustrations, product renders, textured backgrounds, watercolour or painterly effects — any artwork that relies on continuous-tone variation rather than flat defined shapes — is appropriately stored in raster format.

Can be either — depends on content:

Infographics: Simple infographics composed of flat shapes, icons, and type are better as vector. Complex infographics incorporating photographic imagery or subtle shading are better as a combination of vector (for the structural elements) and embedded raster (for the photographic components).

Brand pattern elements: Simple geometric brand patterns are vector. Complex organic patterns with texture are raster.

Advantages of Vector Graphics for Print

Infinite scalability — the defining advantage A vector graphic rendered at 5mm wide is as sharp as the same vector graphic rendered at 5 metres wide. The mathematical description of the shapes, curves, and colours is scale-independent — the output device renders it at whatever resolution the output requires, always producing a perfect result. This is the property that makes vector format the universal requirement for logos, wordmarks, and brand marks in commercial print production.

Colour separation capability Vector files store each colour as a separate, defined object with a specific colour attribute. This colour separation — each shape knows its own colour — allows the production prepress team to extract individual colour layers for screen printing film, colour-separate the design for multi-colour pad printing, or define Pantone spot colours as dedicated ink channels in an offset print job. Raster files store colour as per-pixel values in a merged colour space — colour separation from a raster file is a more complex process that produces less accurate results.

Small file size for complex designs A vector file describing a complex corporate logo with dozens of shapes, curves, and colour areas is typically a small file — perhaps 50–500 KB. The same design stored as a raster file at 300 DPI for print would be several megabytes. Vector files are compact because they store mathematical descriptions rather than pixel grids.

Editable and modifiable Vector files remain fully editable in vector applications — a designer can adjust colour values, modify shapes, change type, or adapt the design for a new application without any quality loss. Raster files degrade with each edit-and-save cycle in lossy formats (JPEG), and cannot be scaled up without quality loss.

Font precision Type in a vector file is rendered from font mathematics — perfectly sharp at any scale. Type in a raster file is a pixel approximation — at small sizes or on fine text, the rasterisation of type introduces slight softening at the character edges that is visible in print.

Advantages of Raster Graphics for Print

Photographic and continuous-tone content Photography, photorealistic renders, watercolour effects, and any artwork with continuous gradients, subtle tonal variation, or complex texture is naturally and correctly stored in raster format. Attempting to represent a photograph as vector shapes produces a radically simplified, posterised interpretation — the rich tonal and colour variation of photography cannot be meaningfully expressed in the flat-shape model of vector graphics.

Complex effects and blending modes Layer blending modes, opacity effects, Gaussian blur, drop shadow, and many other visual effects used in contemporary graphic design produce results that are not expressible in pure vector form. These effects require pixel-level rendering that only raster format supports. Where designs incorporate these effects, a high-resolution raster file is the appropriate submission format for print.

Universal software compatibility Raster image formats — JPEG, TIFF, PNG — are universally readable by any production software without the application compatibility requirements of native vector formats (which may require the specific version of Adobe Illustrator or another vector application used to create them). For image content (photography, campaign illustrations), TIFF or high-quality JPEG is the format that any production facility can open, process, and output without compatibility concerns.

When Vector and Raster Are Combined

Most professional print projects combine both vector and raster content in a single document — a layout that includes a vector logo, vector type, and embedded raster photographs. This combination is the norm in commercial print production and is handled correctly by professional layout applications (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress) and by the PDF/X export format that is the standard for print submission.

In a correctly prepared combined document:

  • Vector elements (logos, type, line art) retain their full scalability and sharpness
  • Raster elements (photographs, illustrated backgrounds) are embedded at full resolution
  • The output PDF contains all elements at their correct format and resolution, ready for prepress processing

The most common problem in combined documents is raster elements that are embedded at insufficient resolution — a photograph embedded in an Illustrator layout at 72 DPI screen resolution will produce a blurry printed result regardless of how cleanly the surrounding vector elements are prepared. Always verify the embedded resolution of all raster elements in a combined document before final export.

File Format Reference: Vector and Raster

Vector Formats:

Adobe Illustrator (.ai) The native format of Adobe Illustrator — the industry standard vector design application used by the majority of professional design studios in the UAE and globally. AI files retain all vector data, layer structure, font information, and colour settings in their native state. The AI format is the ideal source file for logos and brand mark artwork — it is the format in which most professional logos are originally created and should be stored.

When to request: Always request AI format from your design agency for any new logo or brand mark creation. Store AI files in your brand asset library as the master source format.

AI file submission note: Ensure linked images are embedded before submitting — AI files can reference external image files that must be present on the same system. Embedding ensures all content is contained within the single file.

Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) A legacy vector format that remains widely accepted across the print industry. EPS files contain vector data and can be opened by a wide range of design and prepress applications. EPS is the standard vector format for cross-application compatibility — when a design agency supplies a logo to a client who may use it with a variety of different suppliers, EPS is typically supplied as the universal vector format.

When to request: Request EPS alongside AI when distributing logo files to multiple suppliers who may use different design applications. EPS is particularly useful for suppliers whose prepress software may not be the latest Illustrator version.

EPS submission note: Always outline text in EPS files before distribution — EPS font embedding is less reliable than in PDF format, and font substitution issues can arise if the receiving system does not have the exact font version used.

Print-Quality PDF (.pdf — specifically PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4) The PDF format, when exported according to the PDF/X print standard, is the definitive submission format for offset and digital print jobs in the UAE commercial print market. PDF/X guarantees that all fonts are embedded, all images are at full resolution, all colours are correctly defined, and all document settings (bleed, trim marks, colour bars) are correctly included.

When to request: Request PDF/X from design agencies for all final print submissions — brochures, business cards, stationery, packaging, gift box artwork. PDF/X is the format that most UAE commercial print suppliers specify for job submission.

SVG (.svg) Scalable Vector Graphics — an open-standard vector format used primarily in web and digital applications. SVG files are valid vector format but are not universally accepted in commercial print prepress workflows. Some suppliers can process SVG; others cannot. SVG is appropriate for web use and for certain digital decoration workflows but should not be assumed to be universally accepted for print submission without confirming compatibility with the specific supplier.

When to use: SVG is appropriate for web and digital applications, and for submission to suppliers who have specifically confirmed SVG compatibility. For most UAE commercial print applications, AI, EPS, or PDF/X is more reliably accepted.

Raster Formats:

TIFF (.tif, .tiff) The preferred raster format for print photography and raster artwork. TIFF is a lossless format — the pixel data is stored without compression-related quality degradation. TIFF files are significantly larger than equivalent JPEG files but retain every detail of the original image. For photography embedded in corporate print documents — brochures, annual reports, packaging — TIFF at 300 DPI is the ideal submission format.

When to request: Request TIFF from photographers and image libraries for any photography intended for commercial print. Ensure TIFF files are in CMYK colour mode at 300 DPI for standard commercial print applications.

JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg) The most common raster format but also the most problematic for print applications. JPEG uses lossy compression — each time a JPEG is saved, the compression algorithm discards image data that it calculates to be imperceptible. Repeated JPEG saves accumulate compression artefacts — visible as blocky colour banding, edge distortion, and colour noise at print quality. JPEG is acceptable for print submission only when the file is at high quality (minimal compression), at 300 DPI at the intended print size, and has not been repeatedly saved and resaved.

When to use for print: High-quality JPEG photographs at 300 DPI are acceptable for most commercial print applications. Never use JPEG for logos or line art. Never use low-quality or highly compressed JPEG for print submission.

When not to use: Never submit logos, wordmarks, or line art as JPEG. Never submit photographs sourced from websites (which are typically 72 DPI and highly compressed) for commercial print.

PNG (.png) A lossless raster format that supports transparency — the alpha channel — which makes PNG the preferred format for design elements that need to be placed over variable backgrounds without a white or coloured rectangle around them. PNG is the preferred artwork format for DTF printing and UV printing where design boundary transparency is critical.

When to use: PNG with transparency for DTF artwork and UV printing artwork on coloured backgrounds. PNG for raster logos where a vector file is not available (with the understanding that the PNG must be at 300 DPI at the intended print size). PNG is generally not suitable for photographic print submission — TIFF is preferred for photography.

PSD (.psd) Adobe Photoshop’s native format — retains all layers, adjustment layers, smart objects, and channel information. PSD is accepted by many prepress workflows for complex composite artwork. PSD files can be very large and require Adobe Photoshop to open fully. For print submission, a flattened TIFF at full resolution is generally preferred over PSD unless the supplier has specifically requested layered PSD format.

Production Considerations

The single most important practical question: where is your vector logo file?

Many marketing coordinators and brand managers work within organisations where the corporate logo has been used for years — on business cards, letterheads, signage, and branded products — without the internal team ever having needed direct access to the source vector file. The logo appears on everything, but the AI or EPS file that is the canonical source exists on the server of the design agency that created it, in the archived project folder of a designer who left the company years ago, or embedded in a brand guidelines PDF.

The time to find out where the vector source file is — and to obtain a current, accessible copy — is not when a print job is due. It is now, in advance of any production requirement.

Action: Contact your brand’s design agency or the design team member who created or last updated the corporate logo. Request the following files:

  • Master logo in AI format (primary vector source)
  • Logo in EPS format (universal vector distribution format)
  • Logo in PDF format (print-ready vector)
  • Logo in PNG format with transparent background, at 1,000 pixels wide (for digital use)
  • Any required logo variants (reversed/white version, single-colour version, horizontal version, stacked version)

Store these files in a clearly labelled, accessible location on your organisation’s shared file system — a “Brand Assets” or “Logo Files” folder that every member of the marketing and procurement team can access. This single action eliminates the most common cause of print programme delays in UAE corporate marketing operations.

Checking whether a file is truly vector:

A common confusion is the assumption that a file is vector based on its file extension. An EPS file, for example, can contain either vector data or an embedded raster image — the extension alone does not confirm the content type. Similarly, a PDF can be a perfectly vector logo or a rasterised scan of a printed document, both with the same .pdf extension.

To confirm that a file is genuinely vector:

  • Open the file in Adobe Illustrator
  • Zoom in to 1600% or higher
  • If the edges of shapes and text remain perfectly sharp at extreme zoom, the content is vector
  • If the edges become pixelated or blurry at zoom, the file contains raster content rather than true vector data

The auto-trace trap:

Auto-tracing is the process of converting a raster image (such as a logo JPEG) into a vector file using automated software — available in Adobe Illustrator (Image Trace), Inkscape, and online conversion tools. The result of auto-tracing is a vector file, but not a faithful vector representation of the original logo.

Auto-traced vector files typically:

  • Have excessively complex anchor point structures (thousands of points rather than the dozens a designer would use)
  • Produce slightly inaccurate curves that do not match the original design intent
  • Generate poor colour separations because the traced shapes often overlap or have unintended colour blends
  • Fail to reproduce fine text accurately — traced letters have irregular outlines that do not match the original typeface

Auto-traced vector files are a poor substitute for the original vector source file. Always attempt to obtain the original source file from the creating agency rather than accepting an auto-traced version as adequate for production purposes. If the original source file is genuinely unavailable, inform your print supplier that the vector file is auto-traced — a good prepress team will review the file and advise whether it is production-suitable or requires manual redrawing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Saving a JPEG as EPS and presenting it as a vector file: This is the most frequently encountered artwork deception in the commercial print industry — intentional or not. A raster JPEG can be opened in Adobe Illustrator and saved as an EPS file. The resulting file has an .eps extension and looks like a vector file when received by the supplier. But when opened, the artwork team immediately identifies it as a raster image embedded in a vector container — a JPEG disguised as EPS. It does not provide any of the advantages of genuine vector format. Always confirm with your supplier that the vector file you submitted has been confirmed as genuinely vector (not raster embedded in vector container) by their prepress team.

Submitting logo PNG at screen resolution for commercial print: PNG is a lossless format that supports transparency — but it is still a raster format, and the resolution limitation of raster applies fully. A 400-pixel-wide transparent PNG logo extracted from a website is not print-ready at any print size above approximately 34mm at 300 DPI. Do not substitute a PNG for a vector file for any application where vector is specified. Use PNG only for digital applications, or for print applications where the PNG resolution has been confirmed as adequate for the specific print size.

Assuming EPS is always vector: As noted in the production considerations section, EPS files can contain embedded raster images. An EPS exported from Photoshop containing a JPEG image is a raster file in an EPS wrapper — it is not a vector file. Confirm the content type, not just the extension, before treating an EPS as production-ready vector artwork.

Not checking the resolution of embedded images in a layout: In Adobe Illustrator and InDesign layouts that combine vector and raster elements, it is possible for linked or embedded images to be at insufficient resolution while the document itself appears correct at screen display resolution. Always use the Links panel in InDesign (Window → Links) or the Document Info panel in Illustrator to verify the effective resolution of all embedded images before exporting the final print PDF.

Using SVG from a website for print production: SVGs exported from websites — particularly from SVG logo files used for web display — may contain simplified, screen-optimised versions of the logo rather than the full-detail production version. Web SVGs may have reduced anchor point precision, omit complex elements that are not necessary for screen display, or use web-specific SVG features that are not compatible with all commercial print prepress applications. Always obtain SVG files directly from the creating design agency rather than extracting them from a website’s source code.

Regional Insights — UAE, GCC and Africa

UAE: In the UAE corporate print market, the vector vs raster confusion is most commonly encountered in two specific scenarios.

The first is the UAE National Day programme scenario — where a marketing team receives the official UAE National Day visual identity assets from the UAE Government Media Office and needs to incorporate them into branded merchandise and print materials. The official assets are typically supplied in multiple formats, including vector — but marketing teams unfamiliar with print production requirements sometimes use the PNG version of the assets for print applications where vector is required, particularly when the programme timeline is tight and the PNG appears adequate on screen.

The second is the Ramadan gifting programme scenario — where organisations reuse their corporate logo from previous years’ materials. If the previous year’s files were produced by an external agency who no longer holds the account, or if the original source files were not retained internally, the marketing team may only have access to JPEG or PNG versions of the logo from previous years’ printed materials — and these are invariably at insufficient resolution for new production requirements.

For both scenarios, the solution is the same: maintain a current, accessible brand asset library with vector source files for all corporate identity elements, updated whenever the identity is revised. Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s corporate print market shows similar patterns to the UAE, with an additional complexity: the frequent requirement for dual-language Arabic-English logos. Arabic wordmarks require careful vector handling — the complex glyph shaping of Arabic letterforms in vector format must be produced in an Arabic-capable application and verified by a designer who can read Arabic. Auto-traced Arabic vector files are particularly unreliable, as the auto-trace algorithm frequently misinterprets the connecting strokes between Arabic letters, producing broken or incorrectly shaped letterforms.

Africa: In African markets outside South Africa, the infrastructure for professional design and print preparation is less consistently developed than in the UAE and GCC. Many organisations in these markets have logos that exist only as low-resolution raster files — JPEGs or PNGs produced originally for web or social media use, with no vector source file ever created. Case Study: The Missing Vector File — UAE Conference Programme

Organisation: The regional marketing team of a multinational financial technology company, Dubai 

Brief: 3,500 branded polo shirts for the company’s annual GCC financial technology conference — largest event in the organisation’s annual calendar, with senior client attendance from across the region 

Timeline: 6 weeks from brief to delivery

The vector file problem:

The marketing coordinator submitted the company logo as a 320-pixel-wide PNG extracted from the company’s website. The embroidery facility and screen printing facility both flagged the file as inadequate — the PNG was 72 DPI at a total width of 320 pixels, providing approximately 27mm of print width at 300 DPI. The specified logo placement required 90mm width on the left chest for embroidery and 200mm width on the back for screen printing. Neither was achievable from the submitted PNG without severe quality degradation.

The coordinator contacted the company’s regional marketing director, who contacted the global brand team. The global brand team responded that the AI master files were held by the incumbent global design agency and could only be released through a formal brand asset request process. This process — emails, approvals, and a signed brand usage agreement — took four working days.

The AI file received from the global design agency contained the English wordmark only — the Arabic version of the logo, which UAE regulations and the company’s own regional brand standards required on all GCC-market branded materials, was in a separate AI file that had not been included in the initial release. A second request cycle was initiated.

Resolution:
